Lompoc, Santa Barbara County
For most of the twentieth century the fields around Lompoc bloomed with sweet peas, larkspur and marigolds grown for their seed, a business that earned the valley an international reputation. Only a few flower fields remain. The town now promotes its outdoor murals, dozens of them painted on downtown walls in a project begun in 1988, and holds a flower festival each June.
